Air Canada Pilot Faces Charges for Flying Without Proper License from 2009 to 2025

A former Air Canada pilot has been charged after allegedly serving as an airline captain for more than 15 years without possessing the proper certification required to command large commercial passenger aircraft. Canadian authorities announced that Geoffrey Wall of Barrie, Ontario, is accused of acting as an airline captain from 2009 until 2025 while lacking the mandatory airline transport pilot license.

According to Peel Regional Police, Wall allegedly piloted more than 900 domestic and international flights during that period. Investigators claim he misrepresented his qualifications by using fraudulent licensing documents to convince both his employer and aviation regulators that he held the required credentials.

Deputy Police Chief Nick Milinovich described the alleged deception as extremely serious, comparing it to a physician trained in family medicine performing brain surgery without proper qualifications. Authorities said the pilot allegedly misled regulatory agencies and Air Canada regarding his licensing status for years.

Air Canada Responds After Discovery

Air Canada confirmed that while the pilot held a valid commercial pilot license, he had been promoted to captain without obtaining the airline transport pilot license legally required for that position. The airline stated that once the licensing issue was discovered, the pilot was immediately removed from active duties and the matter was voluntarily reported to Transport Canada.

The airline emphasized that the individual is no longer employed by Air Canada. Company officials explained that the issue came to light after irregularities were identified during a documentation review, prompting Transport Canada to contact law enforcement earlier this year.

Air Canada also conducted an internal audit of its pilot workforce and reported finding no additional licensing irregularities. The airline stressed that passenger safety was not compromised because all pilots undergo recurrent simulator training every six months along with annual flight evaluations conducted by certified Transport Canada examiners.

Investigation Reveals Additional Allegations

Police allege that Geoffrey Wall not only operated aircraft without the required captain's license but also submitted fraudulent licensing documents throughout his employment. Investigators further claim that he filed a false police report alleging that pilot licensing documents had been stolen.

Authorities revealed that Transport Canada previously fined Wall for operating without the proper airline transport pilot license. Over his career as a captain, investigators estimate that he earned approximately 2.9 million Canadian dollars, equivalent to roughly 2.1 million U.S. dollars.

A lawyer representing Wall was not immediately available for comment following the announcement of the charges.

Government Reviews Aviation Oversight

Transport Minister Steve MacKinnon announced that the federal government will review the circumstances surrounding the case and determine whether improvements are needed within Canada's aviation oversight system. Despite the lengthy period during which the alleged misconduct occurred, MacKinnon expressed confidence that existing safeguards ultimately succeeded in identifying the issue.

The minister said he was pleased that authorities were able to detect and address the matter, while emphasizing the importance of maintaining strong licensing standards throughout the aviation industry.

Although investigators allege that fraudulent activity continued for many years, Air Canada maintains that extensive recurrent training and mandatory proficiency checks ensured flight operations remained safe. The case nevertheless highlights the importance of credential verification and regulatory oversight within commercial aviation.
