Officers responded to reports of a fight involving numerous individuals at approximately 3:45 a.m., where gunfire erupted during the disturbance.
According to investigators, multiple shots were fired as people attempted to flee the scene, with witnesses reporting additional gunfire outside the business. Emergency medical personnel arrived shortly before 4 a.m. and provided advanced life support before transporting the victim to a local hospital in critical condition.
Authorities later confirmed that the investigation has been classified as a homicide case as detectives continue examining the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Suspect Taken Into Custody
Following the investigation, Honolulu police identified a 28-year-old man as the primary suspect and took him into custody. He was arrested on suspicion of attempted second-degree murder along with multiple firearm-related offenses.
Investigators continue gathering evidence, reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses to determine exactly what led to the shooting and whether additional individuals were involved in the incident.
Police have not yet released further details regarding the suspect or any possible motive behind the altercation.
Police Say Case Is Unrelated to Other Shooting
Honolulu Police Department officials stated that the Hopaka Street shooting is not believed to be connected to another recent shooting incident that occurred near Keeaumoku Street and Kapiolani Boulevard. Although both investigations are being handled by homicide detectives and the Strategic Enforcement Detail, authorities have clarified that no evidence currently links the two cases.
Detectives remain focused on collecting physical evidence and reviewing security camera footage from the area while continuing interviews with witnesses present during the altercation.
Public Asked to Assist Investigation
Investigators are encouraging anyone with information about the shooting to come forward. Police are asking witnesses or anyone with relevant video footage or other evidence to contact 911 or CrimeStoppers Honolulu to assist with the ongoing investigation.
The case remains active as detectives work to establish the sequence of events that led to the shooting and determine whether additional charges or arrests may follow. Authorities emphasized that public cooperation could play an important role in helping investigators fully reconstruct the incident.
