Mississippi Residents Sue xAI and SpaceX Over Data Center Noise and Property Concerns

A group of Mississippi residents has filed a class-action lawsuit against Elon Musk’s companies, xAI and SpaceX, alleging that operations connected to a major artificial intelligence data center project have created ongoing disturbances for nearby communities.

The lawsuit was filed in federal court in Oxford, Mississippi, by three residents seeking to represent a class estimated to include more than 10,000 people. The complaint names xAI, SpaceX and xAI subsidiary MZX Tech as defendants.

According to the lawsuit, residents have experienced constant noise and vibrations from a gas-powered facility that supplies electricity to data centers supporting AI operations in the Southaven area. Plaintiffs say the disruption has invaded daily life and degraded the quality of life for nearby households.

The case adds to mounting scrutiny over the rapid growth of artificial intelligence infrastructure and its effect on communities near large-scale computing facilities.

Plaintiffs Cite Health, Property and Quality-of-Life Issues

Residents say the noise created by the facility is continuous and inescapable, constituting what the lawsuit terms a public nuisance.

The complaint alleges that continuous sound and vibrations have negatively affected health, emotional well-being and the ability of residents to enjoy their homes. Plaintiffs also argue that property values in the surrounding area have declined as a result of the facility’s operations.

Lawyers representing the residents contend that homeowners should be able to enjoy peace and quiet within their neighborhoods without being subjected to round-the-clock industrial noise. The lawsuit seeks damages for alleged injury, including emotional distress and the loss of property value.

In addition to monetary damages, the plaintiffs are seeking a share of profits connected to the project, arguing that the companies benefited while local residents bore the burden of the facility’s impact.

Massive AI Infrastructure Project Draws Attention

The dispute centers on infrastructure developed to support xAI’s rapidly growing artificial intelligence operations.

Court filings state that xAI invested more than $20 billion in the Southaven project, which includes facilities designed to provide the enormous computing power required for advanced AI systems. The development received support from state officials who viewed it as a major economic investment.

The rapid growth of AI has triggered a surge in demand for data centers, power generation and supporting infrastructure across the United States. Companies competing for leadership in the AI industry are pouring billions of dollars into infrastructure to manage increasingly complex computing tasks. Supporters say the investments are creating jobs and economic opportunities, while critics have expressed concerns about energy consumption, environmental impacts and effects on surrounding communities.

Legal and Regulatory Scrutiny Continues to Grow

The class-action lawsuit is not the only legal challenge facing the project. Earlier this year, the NAACP filed a separate lawsuit accusing xAI of violating environmental regulations related to the facility and its operations. That case remains pending while regulators and courts continue evaluating concerns raised by community groups.

The U.S. Department of Justice has also indicated that it may become involved in ongoing legal proceedings because of broader questions surrounding government oversight of large-scale AI infrastructure projects.

Neither xAI nor SpaceX immediately responded publicly to the allegations outlined in the class-action complaint. Elon Musk himself is not named as a defendant in the lawsuit.

As artificial intelligence companies continue expanding their infrastructure footprint, the outcome of the Mississippi case could become an important test of how courts balance technological development, economic investment and community concerns.
