Naples was one of the Italian communities represented in the Andrea Bocelli Foundation's first Voices Of Global Gathering in July 2026. The foundation's local project is based in the city's Rione Sanita and works with Fondazione San Gennaro. Young singers from Naples joined peers from Camerino, the Holy Land and rural Uganda for ten days of rehearsals and cultural exchange before Canticle of Peace at Castel Gandolfo.
The Vatican counted 164 children and young people in the combined choir at the July 29 gathering with Pope Leo XIV and Andrea Bocelli. The total was for the whole ensemble, not a separate count of Neapolitan singers.
Naples has a cultural history extending far beyond the choir. UNESCO describes the city as one of Europe's oldest continuously important urban centers, with a street pattern reflecting Greek foundations and later Roman, medieval and early modern layers. Its historic center is on the World Heritage List. The city is also a living port and metropolitan area with sharply different neighborhoods and opportunities.
The Rione Sanita is a specific local setting within Naples; simply calling the children "from Italy" would obscure that neighborhood base. At the same time, it would be a mistake to use broad descriptions of urban hardship to define every child in the project.
ABF's published program material lists the Naples Voices Of project as active from 2023 and names Fondazione San Gennaro as a partner. The point of such a partnership is continuity: children can rehearse, receive guidance and participate in a local group before any major public performance is offered.
ABF describes choral singing as a tool for musical learning, self-expression and social skills. For the 2026 Global Gathering, ABF listed Naples alongside Camerino, Jerusalem, Bethlehem and Nabikabala. Its schedule began on July 20 and included collective rehearsals, creative activities and cultural exchange. The choir performed with Bocelli at the Teatro del Silenzio in Lajatico and was scheduled to appear for President Sergio Mattarella at the Quirinale before reaching Borgo Laudato si'.
The Naples singers therefore moved from a neighborhood program into a temporary international ensemble. Their local identity remained relevant even when the group was presented as one choir at the final event.
The July 29 prayer service brought the children's music into a setting shaped by Christian reflection. Vatican News reported readings and songs on creation, peace, human dignity and unity. Pope Leo XIV thanked the young performers and described a choir as an example of distinct voices cooperating. He also thanked ABF for its work with children facing educational and social disadvantage. His words were addressed to the whole group, rather than a specific comment on Naples or the Rione Sanita.
Naples and Camerino both supplied Italian choirs, but their program histories differ. The Camerino project is tied to recovery after central Italy's 2016 earthquakes and to ABF's music education work in the Marche. The Naples project is rooted in the Rione Sanita and a local social foundation. Treating them as one undifferentiated Italian delegation would miss why ABF uses local partners and why children may approach the same international gathering from different experiences.

Its strongest claims are modest: ABF runs a local choir in the Rione Sanita with Fondazione San Gennaro; Naples was named among the 2026 Global Gathering origins; members took part in the wider itinerary that ended with Canticle of Peace.
The record does not show what each child felt on returning home, and it does not need to. The value of the page lies in locating the young singers within an ongoing community project rather than reducing them to a moment beside a famous performer.
