Iowa Democrat Eric Armstrong Wins State House Race Despite Suspending Campaign Over Health Issues

Michael AlexNov 6, 2026

Democrat Eric Armstrong has won a western Iowa state House election despite suspending his campaign in September because of personal health issues. Armstrong's name remained on the ballot after he announced that he was stepping away from the race, allowing him to secure victory in a district that had previously supported Republican President Donald Trump.

Armstrong was elected to represent Iowa's District 20, a seat currently held by Democratic state Representative Josh Turek, who won his campaign for the US Senate in Tuesday's midterm elections. The unexpected result adds to the Democratic Party's significant electoral gains in Iowa and across the country.

The outcome also reflects changing voter sentiment in a state where Republicans have maintained considerable political influence. Concerns about rising living costs, government corruption and opposition to overseas military involvement contributed to Republican losses in several races.

Although Republicans will retain control of the Iowa Legislature, their majority in the state House will be smaller. Democrats also secured the governorship after Rob Sand ended the Republican Party's decade-long hold on Iowa's state government.

Armstrong Wins District 20 With 55% of the Vote

Armstrong received approximately 55% of the votes cast by more than 8,000 voters in District 20, defeating Republican candidate Keith Jones by 865 votes. Jones serves as a Pottawattamie County supervisor and previously worked as a police lieutenant before retiring.

The district includes portions of Council Bluffs and Carter Lake and borders Omaha, Nebraska. Armstrong, a former railroad executive, secured the seat despite having withdrawn from active campaigning nearly two months before Election Day.

In a Facebook post published Thursday, Armstrong expressed pride in the result and acknowledged the responsibility associated with the unexpected victory. He said he would be open and transparent about what happens next and emphasized that voters had delivered a clear message about the direction they wanted Iowa to take.

Armstrong also indicated that he intended to carry the district's message to the state Capitol when the new legislative session begins in January.

Health Issues Forced Armstrong to Suspend His Campaign

Armstrong announced his withdrawal from the active campaign on September 7, explaining that personal health issues required his immediate attention and care. In his statement, he said he was stepping away from the campaign effective immediately to prioritize his health.

He described the decision as deeply difficult and thanked voters for their understanding. He also requested privacy while dealing with his personal circumstances.

Despite the announcement, Armstrong's name remained on the November ballot. His victory demonstrates how voter support can produce an unexpected electoral outcome even when a candidate is no longer actively campaigning.

Armstrong has not provided further details about his health circumstances in the available statements. His Thursday message focused instead on acknowledging the result and explaining his intention to be upfront about the next steps.

Democrats Make Significant Gains Across Iowa

Armstrong's victory was part of a broader Democratic improvement across Iowa during the 2026 midterm elections. Democratic candidates performed considerably better in multiple races than they had in recent election cycles, challenging the Republican Party's established strength across the state.

The results were particularly significant because several Iowa communities had previously delivered strong support to Republican candidates. District 20 itself had backed Trump in the 2024 presidential election, making Armstrong's victory another indication of shifting political preferences among voters.

Republicans will continue to control the Iowa Legislature, but their reduced House majority will limit their political advantage. The election also brought a change in statewide leadership as Democrat Rob Sand won the governorship, ending a decade of Republican control over the state's government.

Economic concerns and dissatisfaction with government leadership played an important role in the election. Voters expressed frustration over high costs and government corruption, while opposition to the administration's overseas military involvement contributed to the broader political backlash against Republicans.

Josh Turek Wins Iowa Senate Race

Armstrong's victory also coincided with an important Democratic breakthrough in the US Senate race. Josh Turek, the Democratic state representative whose District 20 seat Armstrong won, secured victory in his campaign for the Senate.

Turek performed strongly in his home county of Pottawattamie, where he led Republican candidate Ashley Hinson by less than one percentage point. His performance marked a significant shift compared with previous election results in the county.

The result is particularly notable because retiring Republican Senator Joni Ernst received nearly 55% of the vote in Pottawattamie County during the 2020 election. Trump also carried the county with approximately 59% of the vote in 2024.

Turek's victory will allow him to replace Ernst in the US Senate, while Armstrong's election will create a new Democratic representative for the state House district.

Election Results Reflect Changing Political Sentiment

The Iowa results highlight the extent of Democratic gains during the 2026 midterm elections. Armstrong's unexpected victory, Turek's Senate win and Rob Sand's gubernatorial success collectively demonstrate how significantly the political landscape has shifted across the state.

For Republicans, the results represent a setback in a state where they have maintained substantial legislative and electoral strength. Although the party will retain control of the Iowa Legislature, its smaller House majority and the arrival of a Democratic governor will create a different governing environment.

Armstrong's victory also raises questions about his next steps following his September announcement. His public statement indicates that he intends to communicate openly about the future, but further details about his ability to serve and his plans for the legislative session have not yet been established.

As the new legislative term approaches in January, District 20 will be represented by a candidate whose election campaign ended before voting began. His victory nevertheless reflects the broader electoral momentum behind Democrats in Iowa and the changing priorities of voters across the state.
